Abstract

The female water spirit is among the most widely attested figures in world folklore, yet the comparative literature on it remains concentrated on European material. Turkic and Central Asian traditions are largely absent from the discussion, and no study has compared the English and Uzbek naming systems directly. This article asks what the two traditions name, how finely they divide the semantic space of the aquatic female being, and what the structure of each nomination field reveals about the conceptualisation behind it.
