Abstract

White cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata L.) is a widely grown vegetable crop of high nutritional value, and the breeding of its open-field hybrids is associated with a number of biological and technical difficulties. Cabbage is a biennial plant with strong self-incompatibility that requires prolonged vernalization in order to flower; these characteristics complicate conventional mutagenesis and breeding. CRISPR/Cas9 and its new generations — Cas12a, base editing, prime editing and multiplex editing — allow targeted, precise modifications to be introduced and thus accelerate hybrid breeding.
